My Gran celebrated her 76th birthday in the hospital. It was, as you can imagine, a very cheery affair. There was cake and candles and singing; all the usual birthday accoutrements. There were also multiple cylinders of pure oxygen lining the corridors where the candles were blown out so there was a certain element of risk that made the rousing chorus of 'Happy Birthday' a totally unique one. All in all it was a weird day, but it cheered everyone up on the ward.
Quote from Joyce, aged 84: "I'm not letting a diabetic coma get in the way of a slice of cake."
