Sitting in a very sunny garden this afternoon I was happily absorbing Neverwhere with my ears. As it piped away I began doze and as I did I started to ponder exactly how easy it would be for someone to vanish. By vanish I mean how feasible it would be for some random person to cease being where they're supposed to be; to slip out of their life, if you like.

In this imagined instance I calculated my likelihood of being missed if such a fate were to befall me. I factored in my daily activities, the people I speak to on a daily basis and my regular encounters with friends, acquaintances and those who might notice me 'not being there'.

In general I concluded that vanishing would indeed be rather simple...
